Water Repellent Silicone Rubber

Silicone material is also collectively referred to as “silicone rubber”. Wipers with strips made of this special modified silicone coating material have excellent advantages compared to traditional wipers with ordinary rubber strips.

The low surface tension of silicone rubber gives it special hydrophobic properties. However, the surface friction coefficient of ordinary silicone rubber materials is huge and cannot meet the requirements for the use of wiper strips, which is also the reason for the severe jittering, bouncing and abnormal noise appeared to many inferior Water Repellent wiper bladess while using.

It is said that the service life of this new Silicone windshield wipers is about 3-4 years. I was skeptical then because I don’t believe that wipers could ever form hydrophobic coating for windshield glass automatically except that you add coating solution to it regularly.

But how can a wiper contain coating solution with such small mechanic structure?

So I ordered a pair to try out.

There’s a plastic protecting case on the new Silicone windshield wipers.

I’m not sure if the picture is clear enough to show the complicated structure of the wipers. It’s got many layers, about 4-5 layers I guess.

Silicone windshield wipers Installation

First, apply some oil film remover on the windshield glass to thoroughly clean it.

Then rinse the glass with clear water.

Blow the glass to dry with high pressure draft, which is very important for the following instruction.

Turn up the Silicone windshield wipers and let them wipe the dry glass for 5-10 minutes.

Silicone windshield wipers Using Experience

The working principle of this product is that the integrated coating material molecules will form a water repellent film gradually on the glass surface as the wipers work.

Let’s quit the nonsense and check the performance! The coating effect is no different than that of ordinary coating processes. The rainwater becomes little droplets on the glass surface. If we are driving on highways in high speed, the water droplets will roll backwards and fly off of the glass.

I’m going to pour this bottle of water onto the windshield to show you guys the actual effect.

Most of water flew away except a few drops stays on the glass. But the water remains on the glass is like pearls, it hasn’t form a water film to hinder the sight like it usually does. Overall the coating effect is quite OK.

In addition, this wiper is also quiet compared to other coating wipers (not sure if it’s because we are testing a new pair).

For aged rubber strips – Fix Wiper Blades problems?

When the rubber strips are aged, it is recommended to polish them with 600# sandpaper and water. The main purpose of the polishing is to grind away the hardened layer of the rubber strip and expose the inner soft parts that are not aged to restore the water scrapping function. (The aged wiper can only be polished once. When second polish can cause the damage to the strip hair of and abrasion of the windshield).

To Prepare the New Wipers

When a new wiper cannot scrape off water entirely, you can wipe the rubber strip of the wiper softly with wet paper towels to remove some of the graphite layer of the new wiper, thus increase the friction between wiper strip and windshield glass to improve the water scraping effect.

When the Wiper Bounces

The key to solve the bouncing problem of wipers is to reduce the friction between the wiper strip and the windshield glass.

First, clean the windshield with glass water, then wipe the glass thoroughly with crumpled newspaper. The ink on the newspaper will leave a thin layer of oil on the windshield. Don’t forget to wipe the rubber strip with newspaper, too.

Final Tips:

For a longer service life of wiper, it is best not to expose it to the sun for a long time. To maintain the wiper. You also need to pay attention to the maintenance of the water spraying system of your car: add neutral, decontaminating and lubricating cleaning agents, fill it with water in time, and avoid no-load of the water spray motor.

Of course, you don’t need to compromise if the wiper is really aged. You should change it when it’s necessary, after all, safety is the most important.

01.Gum Stains

When parking in open air in the summer, gum or rotten fruit can easily leave stains on the windshield if your car is placed right under a tree. After two or three days of parking, the stains will stick to the glass surface tightly, which can produce speckled water film in rainy days that cannot be scraped off, then windshield wipers aren’t working.

02.Oil Film

Oil particles can also be carried in the exhaust of vehicles creeping on the urban roads which make windshield wipers aren’t working. At high temperatures, oil particles will form an oil film on the surface of the windshield glass. The wiper strip cannot completely wipe off the water droplets on the windshield due to the oil film barrier.

If you look closely, you will notice the obvious oil marks.

03.Aged Wiper Strips

After being exposed to the sun, air, wind and rain for a long time, the wiper strip can age easily. An aged wiper strip becomes hard and can no longer fit the arc of the windshield completely. The smooth surface of the rubber strip will form a water film with rainwater instead of wiping off the water on the windshield.

04.Deformation of Wiper Rod

Generally, the wiper rods do not easily deform. But the possibility that some little tykes could damage the wiper rods while playing near the car. If not repaired for a long time, the deformed wiper rods can easily lead to windshield scratches, which adds additional maintenance costs.

05.Unprepared New Wipers

In order to ensure the maximum service life, the new wiper strips will be covered with a layer of graphite when it leaves the factory. The graphite layer can also be an obstacle for the wipers to wipe off the water on the windshield surface completely.

06.Bouncing Wipers

If the friction of the wiper strip is too large, there will be some abnormal noise and bouncing when the wipers is working. The bouncing is not only annoying, but can also weaken scraping performance of the wipers. The noise can also have negative influence on your driving experience.

Bouncing wipers will also leave wavy lines and water stains.
